Compress and extract RAR files from GNU / Linux

Bit by bit, RAR format is becoming a more common way of compressing files and saving disk space, especially on systems like Windows, thanks to programs like WinRAR.

RAR is the new Linux version of WinRAR, the famous Windows file compressor, which also allows GNU / Linux users to compress and extract files in this format.

It integrates seamlessly with the desktop you're using, adapting to the compression tool included by default on your system.

The only drawback you might encounter with RAR is that it is shareware (trial version), which is unusual for GNU / Linux. But there is no alternative because at the moment there is no other way to create RAR files in Linux.
