Windows 10: Start Menu and Search not working

So here we are with yet another issue and it’s resolution on Windows 10. The Start menu which came back with Windows 10 has been noticed to be not as stable as it worked on Windows 7. All of a sudden you may notice that when you click on the start menu the icon turns blue but then nothing happens. Even hitting the windows key on the keyboard is no use. Now for normal users, there are many apps and settings that can be accessed only through the Start Menu, but it not working. What can you do? Well read on and follow these steps and you can solve this problem all by yourself.

Method 1: Restart Windows Explorer

This can be your first solution. Restarting windows explorer may solve windows 10 start menu not working problem. To do it –

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete from you Keyboard.
  • Then click on Task Manager.
  • Now find Windows Explorer from process list of windows task manager.
  • Right click on Windows Explorer & select Restart.


Method 2: Fix from Windows PowerShell

This is a great method to fix windows 10 start menu & Cortana not working problem. It works for many users. To fix start menu not working from Windows PowerShell follow the steps below.

  • From task manager, click on File and Run new task.


  • Then type PowerShell and hit Enter.
  • Remember to run this task as administrator.
  • In poweshell paste the command given below and hit enter.Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml"}
  • Wait for the process to complete. You may see some pop up errors. Just ignore them.

Method 3: Fix from Command Prompt

Windows 10 start menu not working problem can be fixed by a simple command on command prompt. To do it-

  • Right click on Start Button (Windows Logo) and select Command Prompt (Admin). Or run it as administrator like powershell, If your can’t right click on taskbar.


  • Then type the following command and hit enter.

ren %windir%\\System32\\AppLocker\\Plugin*.* *.bak

  • Restart your PC.

See if windows 10 start menu & cortana not working problem has been fixed.

Method 4: Fix from Services

It is very easy. Just follow the steps.

  • Open Run from Windows task manager as before.
  • Type SERVICES.MSC and hit enter.
  • Find Application Identity.

Right click on that and select Start. After you have tried all these methods and still the start menu does not work you can try to reset the pc. Go to Settings--> Update & Security-->Recovery-->Reset This PC. Choose the option to keep my files and reset. Alternatively you can create a new user account with admin privileges and transfer your data to the new account.   NOTE: if none of the above methods work, Inplace upgrade or repairing the windows is the last option. You need to download Windows 10 ISO file and run the setup by keeping apps and files.
